Wayne,

Do you use the Market News feature of the CSW realtime Ticker? It polls for news from our site every 3 minutes, with a manual override.

I'll forward some of these comments to our news team, especially your concerns about timeliness.

Thanks,
Gerry Rempel

re: News Alerts Service

Not much response concerning a viable news alert service. I see the following possible reasons to explain this:

1. People don't feel they need news to trade effectively.
2. People do feel they need it, but also feel that they
are getting it.
3. There is a tool out there that people are using but
not telling us about.
4. Canadians are apathetic. They simply don't believe
that can do anything about the problem.

I opine that #4 is as valid as any of the others. This would not be the first thing on my list to fix if God were a trader and told me I could choose any new tool or make any change to the Canadian trading business. It would not even make my top five desired changes, but I think we can do something about this one.

The problem is small enough that we could get it fixed. I'm a developer, and I would not expect to find a whole bunch of us who are trading and lurking through Canadian threads, but with one or two other programmer-types, we could prototype this tool in 8-10 person days, and have a beta version for selected use in 18-20 person days.

The alternative is to organize an effort to lobby for a change and followup on said lobby. How many of us subscribe to CSW? I'm not suggesting that we become militant, so un-Canadian -gg-, but it would be difficult to ignore us as a group. Speaking for myself, I would rather see CSW develop non-ticker-dependent, realtime news alert service that put more resources into their current news product.

Just some thoughts I had as I reread the thread.

Cheers. --Allan

Get this product:

digiportal.com

OmniViewer is something I've been looking for for a long time. It does (almost) everything on our wish list for a news ticker. I downloaded it last night and currently have a desktop ticker showing me headlines from Cdn Corp News, Yahoo, and Newswire.

It polls URLs, let's you specify where interesting information (i.e., headlines) begin, how to select them, and when to recognize the end of interesting content. The headlines are sent to the scrolling ticker and you can select them to see the full content in a lightweight internal browser. It handles authentification and even form-entry logins.

This program could have many applications for retrieving and consolidating information off the Web. For example, I suppose one could configure it to run a ticker of new messages appearing on an SI thread, then click on the ones that interest you to see the full content.

Web pages are accessed via profiles. These can contain complex scripting to more accurately pull out the right pieces of Web pages. We can setup a repository of profiles for Canadian sites if there is enough interest.
