VG Semicon - Coherent

I see red, NIR, no blue.

MBE is key for Coherent's laser diode production:

Coherent became one of the first companies to begin producing Al-free lasers in high volumes in early 1997. Their production process is based entirely on epiwafers grown in a V100 System at Coherent Tutcore.

I've also wondered about production. I figured that once you required high volumes you'd be moving away from the strength of MBE, which would favor competing processes like MOCVD. That is clearly the case for low-priced products like LEDs. Tutcore shows that MBE can hold its own at the high end; I'm impressed that they can do so much with a single system. Perhaps the long-term trend towards smaller dimensions will ultimately work to the advantage of MBE, since it gives the best control down to atomic dimensions.
