Anyone...I've recently started trying some games on the computer and discovered this problem...when running games off the CD the sound hangs up/skips like a scratch on an old album and it gets out of synch with the video, which in turn gets so jerky it's useless. This occurred first on a "free" game from a bundle but this week it also occurred on a brand new game that cost some real $$$. The games I've tried are Recoil and European Air War, on this system...

Abit BH6
Celeron 300A @ 450
toshiba CD-ROM
Maxtor 8.4 HD
Diamond Monster MX300
ATI Expert98 8 meg. video
Boston Acoustic speakers

I called Toshiba and they had me change the DMA setting, which didn't help, and the game company suggested I do a full install on the HD...the game (EAW) functioned fine off the HD.

Is it common to do full installs of games or should they work fine off the CD? If so, does anyone have any idea what could be causing the skipping/out of synch problem with sound and video when playing off the CD? Thanks.

Dave

Thanks.

I've got another idea for the upgrade workaround: Is it just the setup.exe file that is different on an upgrade CD?

Or is there something in each of the CAB files?

Probably the latter since if it was the former everyone would know how to get around it.
