Re JDSU and market control--I would think that the market is really being controlled by the telcos. LU has always designed and built to open non-proprietary standards, because that's what the old ATT demanded. With the breakup, the Regional Bells and other incumbents have tended to demand open standards and interoperability in their new implementations. They seem to have succeeded in DSL, which is why no Gorilla or King has emerged there--the power resides with the end customer telcos.

Exciting in JDSU is that they appear to be developing a broader list of clients, and are relatively stronger in dealing with the telcos. As JDSU continues to get stronger faster than the telcos, their ability to impose a proprietary standard will increase. And they may be able to morph into Gorilla.

btw, Oracle is an example of an emerging King morphing into a Gorilla. In fact, their proprietary solution in row-locking is what propelled them from first-among-equals to Gorilla. [This according to both the manual, and posts on Oracle on this thread in the past week].

Best,
John
