Ten - Re: "Transmeta will make processors that allow low-end laptops to run longer than your average laptop. I think that's the differentiating factor that Transmeta is looking for"

That's a good assessment.

However, I'm pretty convinced that low power/long battery life is NOT a first order item in most customer's purchase decisions.

AMD's Kmart 6 shooters always suck down more power than Intel CPUs for a given frequency - yet people still by the Kmart chips/notebooks.

Price may be a swing factor, but Power dissipation most likely isn't.

Witness all the unsold Win CE machines still sitting on store shelves - they all have very low power consumption.

Tench,

Re:"transmeta"

Transmeta doesn't stand a chance IMHO.

They have a PDF on performance in their web site - it shows how desperate they were to fill in the cracks on performance.

As far as power being a major issue.

I do see laptops taking larger market share.

But its more for ergonomics and ease of space etc.

Mine is plugged into the wall 90% of the time.

The rest I use it for powerpoint presentations.

I see the incremental market growth for laptops as these customers as desktop replacements.

In that environment good performance and full software compatibiity is more important than 3 hr batter life vs 6 hrs.

Just my .02.

regards,

Kash

Ten, I still remember web surfing on my sister's Pentium MMX 266 MHz laptop that I bought her for Christmas over a year
ago. I expected that thing to be as slow as molasses, but to my surprise, her laptop performed almost as well as my
custom-built Pentium II desktop when it came to the Internet!

That may be true if you're just surfing the web, but when you do any kind of task switching, even to go clean up your email, or simply when you boot up and go through the plug and pray, processor speed matters.
