Pat: write this down: CHINA.

:-)

China is where they will open new plants and find
Packaging, manufacturing, talent .
It's like looking at Chinese silk painting.Tedious process
by hand, but it is worth the effort,

TA@sitting on PC,idly passing time, waiting for JDSU to go to 280 and split.com

Message #4802 from pat mudge at Jan 20 2000 10:06AM

The production of fibre-optic gear like the technology itself is still in its infancy. Much more of the work is still done by hand than in the
computer and semiconductor industries.

I've heard this said more than once.

Packaging, manufacturing, talent --- three spectres that keep f.o. CEOs awake at night.

Pat

I would be happier to see production expanded by more automation in Canada, US or Mexico than see large plants in China. Intellectual property rights are a concern! But I suppose that once these become commodity products they would be copied offshore anyway and it is better to own a piece of the pie. It also gives one a potential foothold into these large markets.

Some of the major telecom equipment suppliers have plants or joint ventures in the People's Republic I seem to recall.
Does anyone know if these operations have been beneficial to their NA or European partners?
