Questions are, a) is Bell Labs still as high quality a research lab as it used to be, and b) can LU capitalize on their discoveries (in, e.g., the way Xerox didn't with PARC).

There is no question that Bell Labs is still a high quality research lab. The problem seems to be with the implementation. Maybe, Lucent needs to concentrate on software application and integration. I notice that Nortel is working on a product called "packet core" which will be integrated into its network management which will have a common control system so the optical layer can communicate with the switching layer. OSDI is worried about this product. I hear nothing from Lucent on this issue.

I'll take a shot at that, Christopher.

A. Yes

B. That is still largely in "test mode", IMO. The key to immense profitability vs average profitability hinges on the success with which they can transition products out of the lab and into the business world. Not an easy task but treasures await the firm that can optimally capitalize on their R&D. The diamonds are in their mine; can they get them out?

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing LU spin-off some of their divisions and focus on the core emerging technologies.
