Good point Tom. I've wanted to do that for quite a while now, but have never had the time to collect all the data in one go. If someone would be nice enough to do that for us on one of the threads, would gladly do the rest. Otherwise, I will get to it at some point in time.
Thx

In a post titled "Superconductivity, a coming of age?" that I posted early January
Message 12438268
I gave several reasons of why I thought the sector is becoming more mature. Never
in my wildest dreams did I think it would take off so fast, or be recognized as
quickly. In that post I attempted to create a market cap index to the sector in
addition to putting forward some arguments that demonstrate the sector's significance.

Before presenting an update to the index I would like to say that with this rise,
the sector as a whole has passed a significant threshold. One that actually changes
the risk reward profile completely. This meteoric rise in the index that came about
this year has changed the sector's access to capital, regardless of the companies'
speed of success in marketing. In deed success will be aided by this access.

If you think about it, the various companies in this sector had to undergo tremendous
dilution in order to raise one or two million dollars at a time during 98 and 99. A
real struggle. At current levels raising $50mm will hardly cost any of them 5% dilution.
This means that each of these companies can raise now more capital than all they have
spent on their past research during their entire life. This can be done now at a
fraction of the cost. It will surely hasten the pace of their research, in addition
to aiding them in facing their production challenges.

The institutional interest that participated in the last few rounds of funding at
each of the companies that did so, and that that is becoming more evident in the
current market activity are simply icing on the (birthday) cake.

Listed below is a tabulation of the performance of that index year to date.
