Cow, yes, I would try it again. I would get an AOL CD and download the whole thing again. I know re-formatting can be a pain, but you could back up everything on a zip drive and, if you crashed again, you would be able to re-format more easily. As you know, with AOL, there are good tech people and there are good tech people. Try to get a supervisory level tech type.

I can't imagine that Roadrunner is the problem. Could it be a setting for your cable modem. Perhaps you could check with them to see if your cable modem settings got botched up.

I also presume you're using Windows 98, either classic or second edition?
