John, OTOTOT, the football discussion that won't die: did you see this ref's explanation of the "incomplete pass" to Bert Emanuel call?

But, with the timeout, Markbreit was able to study the play
and signaled to referee Bill Carollo to take another look.
After looking at the play, 'It was apparent that the player,
as he was catching the ball, he used the ground and the tip
of the ball hit the ground. By rule, you cannot use the
ground, or have assistance from the ground, to make the
catch.'

It made no difference, Carollo went on, that Emanuel's
knees may have hit the ground before the tip of the ball did,
just as it made no difference that Emanuel seemed to have
possession of the ball even though the tip of the ball
touched the ground. 'Because the ball hit the ground, by
rule it's an automatic incomplete pass,' said Carollo.

So, to extend that, if a receiver goes, say 10 feet into the air to catch a ball, hangs in the air for 2 seconds while having complete possession of the ball, falls to the ground, and the tip of the ball hits the ground without his hands under it, it's incomplete? I don't see any difference between that and the play yesterday except time.

Hold the superbowl, Rams can't go until this is resolved.

Tony

John:

Re: Off-topic - Different local press report different versions. According the the Bucs and the press here, the Rams were mouthing off all game. After the Bucs had given up the ball for the last time, the Rams players came over to the Bucs bench to rub it in (not according to the press, clearly visable on TV). Again according to the players and the local press, they showed a complete lack of class for a team that had won a playoff game. But I'm sure your version is correct.

You're right about the local press coverage varying about the taunting. Here in St. Louis, the press was complaining about the bad sportsmanship of the Bucs, especially when one of them intercepted a pass and did the "Bob and weave" in the Rams' face. Local reporters on the scene also said there was a lot of mouthing-off to the Rams by players on the Bucs sideline. "The play" was also downplayed here, as it seems to have been nationally - there's only a brief mention of the called-back reception on the CNNSI and ESPN web sites. Fans here are convinced that the Rams defense would have held out in any case.

RE: "cocky dbs" held LA Rams, (opps, I forget that LA wouldn't support the team, so they moved to St. Louis) to 11 points. Skilled is probably a better word, though Mary would argue.

John, I was referring to the Buc interception and their imitation Ram dance, very dumb thing to do, fires up the opponent.

Lets cut to the bottom line, Rams won and Bucs have gone home.
