Mike,

Maintaining the current fiat system is in the best interests of the existing relationship between governments, central bankers, and financial institutions. Everything possible will be done to preserve it. That includes all sorts of things that are not in the general public's interests. The more frayed the system gets the more extreme the measures taken to preserve it will be. It isn't an economic debate though it often masquerades as one. It's a political battle. The government and financial institutions do NOT want sound money. It would take power away from them. (IMHO)
