Tony, I have absolutely no idea regarding Itanium's performance relative to the competition. I'm just saying that Linley Gwennap thinks Itanium may demonstrate a 30% performance advantage over the current leader, Alpha. But it's his "so what?" tone that really ticks me off. A 30% advantage is nothing to blow off. Combine that with Intel's SHV (Standard High Volume) strategy for servers, and Itanium will really kick some butt in terms of sales and reputation. Yet Mr. Gwennap feels that unless Itanium demonstrates more that just a "mere" 30% advantage, it will not be a complete victory.

Like I said before, this is the same guy who was very excited over the Athlon processor. But Athlon isn't even close to demonstrating a 30% advantage over Pentium III. Even more so, Pentium III beats Athlon in some benchmarks. Why isn't Mr. Gwennap judging Athlon on the same standard as he is judging Itanium's potential performance?
