Jim -
thanks for the research, valuable as always.

re: They still have not demonstrated that they have the right business model to compete with DELL on DELL's turf over the long term.
I think the trends we have seen over the last couple of years conclusively demonstrate that CPQ does NOT have the business model to compete effectively on DELL's turf - in fact I would say that no one is coming close to doing that. The question in my mind is how effectively DELL will be able to expand that turf... I think their continued dominance in the commercial desktop space is assured, they have shown no failures of execution, solved their growth problems well, kept good focus on quality and great execution with customers. DELL needs to do better at expanding that model to the non-english-speaking world - looking at their penetration, they have a lot of opportunity outside the US and UK. I think this is the likely next move and will help provide the growth they will need this year and next...

My concerns with DELL are more connected to the expectations set for them (and that they continue to set for themselves) and the impact of those expectations on future stock price. On a business level, I would not like to be the one to try and compete with DELL where DELL is strong - seems like a fool's errand.

I wonder how long it will take the analysts to figure out what the implications of CPQ's sequential growth are for DELL's quarter, maybe a day or so after DELL's earnings announcement??? Especially since CPQ's Q includes the shortage month of October and DELL's does not...

I was expecting a rise in DELL's price today.
