THE BUZZ AT THE BELL
It was a day of quiet unease, in spite of the highest
consumer confidence rating ever. A snowstorm closed
Washington, D.C., and cancelled Alan Greenspan's appearance
before Congress. The Dow was down almost 100 points before
rebounding into positive territory. The Nasdaq bounced
around before a late rally, but with no clear direction
or leadership - milling like a heard of prairie cattle
that sniffs something distant but threatening. Can't
sleep and don't know which way to run. Statisticians
report that days full of uncertainty and
reversals are characteristic of late January. They call
it the "January 23rd effect."
