Yes, this is stupid. But unfortunately, it will bite, and bite bad. I'm just too disgusted to comment much further - other than to say: what a tragedy that NITE management wasn't smart enough to build momentum when they had a chance back in April of 99. Once you have huge momentum, one isolated analyst cannot damage your stock (just look at many other momentum stocks where a negative analyst is shrugged off). In particular if the analyst is isolated (most are positive on NITE). Frankly, I did not expect this downgrade. I really did not. I was surprised. In light of this, I must extend the horizon on when the stock will recover. I honestly thought 33-35 was a reasonable place to start. Looks like it is going to go lower and the time to recover has just gotten MUCH, much longer. Now NITE must *prove* that they are growing market share and profits, plus diversifying - FOR MANY QUARTERS, to bring back confidence and share-price appreciation. All because of one stupid analyst. But how do you predict stupidity? Ever since last summer's break of $60, I said it would be a *LONG* HARD road up to recovery to former heights of $82 etc. The road just got longer. I really wish KP and gang gave some thought to finding ways to boost shareholder value through higher share-price. This is not a joke. It is not just a question of a great deal of pain for the shareholders. It will now impact business. How are you going to do acquisitions when your price hovers in the 20's (or as Bear Stearns would have it - below $20)? You may laugh, but I keep thinking about that 23-35 collar. When it was first announced - I was horrified. Alarm bells went off for me. The stock zoomed - and I thought to myself: "wow, this will be a shorters delight". I posted as much at the time, but was booed. Now that collar looks more and more like a chokehold. I really wish KP and gang would address themselves explicitly to managing the stock for a change. This is actually very dangerous for the company. Lowball takeout bids are a danger - when the shareholders are so shellshocked, they may accept pennies on the dollar in a takeover. This has real business consequences. KP must stop the bleeding. I am truly saddened for the many shareholders who lost money in this stock. Morgan
