<Wondere if IBM would bring out their LTO if SEG and HP haven't achieved compatibility? -Z>

Why do you think the would not bring it out?

Any idea when HP and Seagate will actually ship the thing? It seems HP keeps pushing it out, cant listen to their predictions.

Z,
No, I didn't listen to the call, never did get the number or code for it. I feel just a little burned out by this sector right now, there are too many other companies out there where you can make good money without the same games, or what feels like games. Perhaps that is eventually what will allow whoever it is that turns out to be blowing the least smoke to make a lot of money, since to make tape drives that go fast enough and media that lasts long enough under such stressful conditions seems to be pretty difficult, much more difficult that people appear to have bargained for.

On LTO: Given the problems that people have had, I doubt if the compatibility issue is one that will hold IBM or either of the other two vendors up. Indeed, that first one out will probably just claim the "standard" for themselves. The only reason that they got together in the first place was to try to come up with a ploy to dent DLT. If SDLT comes out OK, if they actually ship in volume by July or so, if they are actually backward compatible--even if the backward compatibility doesn't come until later in the year--DSS will be OK, they will at least hold their own, I think. If PvC got out because he could see that things were heating up and his plans were going awry, well.....

If you get me the Exabyte number, I'd listen this weekend if they are still up. Otherwise, forget it. It isn't worth it to me. I'm waiting for a nice ECM correction which is due any month now to put some cash to work, and I'm thanking Professor Shugart for saving my butt this year.

Best,
Sam
