Well I supply test equipment to the PCB industry. I will ask around next week at some of the higher volume shops that I deal with. The PCB shop I usedto work for (about 8 yrs ago) we did special projects for IBM that required Si over Cu/Ni/Au not sure of the reasoning.

Back 10 years ago the the etch resist for manufacturing PCBs was 60/40 SnPb which would be stripped off after etching. Now they just use Sn as a etch resist.
