SDL Shares Hit New High on Takeover Speculation
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Shares of fiber optic component maker SDL Inc. (NasdaqNM:SDLI - news) rose more than 15 percent on Thursday amid market rumors of a potential takeover, analysts and traders said.

Shares of SDL gained 37-7/8 to hit a new high of 287 on Nasdaq market. The stock has soared more than 1,000 percent over the past 12 months, benefiting from intense interest in companies that make equipment and components for advanced fiber optic communications networks.

SDL's products are used to send data, voice and video over fiber optic networks. Representatives for San Jose, Calif.-based SDL did not return calls seeking comment.

A strategist with market research firm Wall Street Strategies said rumors have circulated about a potential SDL deal with JDS Uniphase Corp. (NasdaqNM:JDSU - news)

``There's either going to be a takeover by JDS Uniphase or a merger between these two companies. There's definitely something brewing,' the strategist said.

A deal could emerge over the weekend and SDL could fetch more than $300 a share, the strategist said.

Kent:

JDSU is a tough stock to time entry and exit points. Everyone keeps talking about volatility and we have had more than our share of it in January.

As for me, I am doing a Rip Van Winkle on this one. Wake me up a year from now. My prediction is that JDSU Longs will have 3X the shares worth around $200 per share January 28th 2001.

Both approaches could be appropriate depending on conviction, timing, markets etc. I just hope I don't get insomnia.

KK says it best. "It's all about bandwith". Ask yourself how important is the internet to your life? How important is speed and reliability in B2B? Consumers will wait for pages to build, business will demand performance.

If JDSU truly is a King/possible Gorilla, in an ascendent technology, then it is under priced.

All the Best,

WWW

Kent,

Well heck. What can I say? I guess my brilliance finally won you over! <vbg> Seriously, I have benefited greatly from your posts about the intensity of the sales growth in FO--that helped to confirm my original decision to buy JDU.

Yes, anybody who didn't take my oft-stated position and bought the stock on the upward expansion of the P/E was well-rewarded on paper. We all had a heck of a lot of fun--it was a wild ride and we did it in the Cowboy way. Now the trick will be to book the rewards in the area of the the top. The trick will be to avoid having to live through the panic of a sharply falling market. The only question is, when is the top?

May I ask: What factors lead you to go to so much cash?

Ciao,
David Todtman
