Bob, while we are on this subject, to what extant we need to be politically correct in what we say when we say comments with tongue in cheek?

Also, if certain CNBC anchors take offense to every thing that is said negatively of them, is it SI's policy to appease them because they have a powerful medium than those of us with valid reasoning? For example, Ted David has the audacity to call several Si posters as Monday Morning quarterbacks, wann be broadcasters and self proclaimed experts. When I challenged him for this kind of prejudice, there was no response. When I challenged him to run an Investigative piece that would uncover an accounting scam like the one at Cendent before it becomes news. No reply.

And then he takes offense at my tongue in cheek comment. I am not offended by his taking offense at my comment. But, what I am confused about is where SI stands on this issue. Would you rather have the intellect of your subscriber/member base be ridiculed by a TV anchor with a powerful media voice. Or, let the free speech of your members prevail - especially if it is tongue-in-cheek?

Bob, with all due respect, TV personalities are public figures just as politicians, professional athletes and prominent CEOs are. You could go to any thread at SI and pick out "nasty" descriptions of public figures and warn the parties. Ever notice what people call Bill Gates? Bill Clinton? John Rocker?

Maria Bartiromo doesn't bother me as much some here, but I believe censoring how posters refer to her is starting down a slippery slope that the SI community would not want. Don't you have a tough enough job trying to keep harmony in this community without venturing into the public person debate? This is not a criticism, just a question.

Jusy my two cents.

GNET SI BOB double standard ALERT!
When Mark Haines of CNBC gave Russell Horowitz (GNET CEO) a few questions that GNET shareholders didn't like, Mark was called "Bark" (by myself and others) and several SI loyal GNET threaders called him "chubby cheeks" and used SI to do so.
Now I know for fact Bob that you read the GNET thread so we have a double standard going on here don't we? How many GNET thread members were told what they could and could not say?
Maria is no ferret, she is a fox,(but that is just my opinion). However, seeing how I just called her an animal name (eg fox, like ferret) I guess you will now tell me how to use my FREE SPEECH.
BTW, humans are animals, look it up or go to a war some time.
BLUE

How about this: Maria is an overrated cheerleader and incredibly biased for reasons that are not understood. Get rid of her and replace her with Michelle Cabruso Cabrera who has twice Maria's brains and can deal with complex issues in some depth. I'm sure Ted would approve, I think he's in love.

I agree wholeheartedly with Bob's sentiments, except I wouldn't just single out Gary. IMO, this whole thread, which used to be great, has turned into a cesspool. Having said that, I doubt that there's much SI can do about it. I know much less about TOU than Bob, but it seems to me that this is more of a gray area than an outright violation, especially since this is a "Coffee Shop" thread.

From what I've seen in similar situations, attempts by SI to improve the dialogue will only result in further deterioration of the thread, as well as several posts misinterpreting the First Amendment. The only hope for this thread is for the participants to take it upon themselves to improve the content. This thread can be good (e.g. the recent commentary on the way Maria shouts when reporting from the floor - which coincidentally or not was followed by an improvement in her delivery). I have believed for a while that too much of it has degenerated into mean spirited attacks, or has gotten unnecessarily personal, but I continue to hope for improvement.

So the TOU makes no distinction between public figures and private figures? However there is some rank hypocrisy going on here- as the new people on the feelies thread say all kinds of insulting things about Clinton- MUCH worse than the mere ferret epithet- and I am SURE you would agree that feelies is not a per se Clinton thread. And yet- nothing is done. So I would think ferret is a pretty tame thing to say about a public figure EVEN on the ever so constructive CNBS thread. You appear to ME to be really inconsistent. When REAL people on SI (who are not public figures) get insulted you do nothing. When some TV personality gets called a ferret you get your shorts in a twist. That just seems completely WRONG to me. And I would guess it isn't just me.
