Yeah, you named some really good ballplayers there. I think you are pretty much on it. I was only in the 10th grade in 1978, but remember the game against Kentucky very well. My opinion, Duke had the better team, but Goose Givens was just on fire in that one. I have been an ACC basketball junkie for as long as I can remember. I can remember sneaking a little transister radio into class to listen to the ACC tournament. Back in those days, you had to win it to even go to the NCAA tournament. I love the rich tradition the conference has, and hope this little slump is only temporary.

I would pick Johnny Dawkins, Christian Laettner, Grant Hill, Bobby Hurley, probably Mike Gminski...Its hard to leave off Jeff Mullins or Art Heyman. But Jim Spanarkel and Tate Armstrong were both very good players, too. Not to mention Gene Banks.

I really like Mike Gminski, and Jay Bilas a lot. I am a season ticket holder for the Hornets, and Gminski is a commentator for them. He is very approachable after games. You can walk down to the court, and he will always speak to you. A real laid back guy. Carolina never could stop him when he was playing for Duke. Of course, hardly anybody else could either. Jay Bilas used to work in one of the buildings Uptown, when I was working some there. And he is another one who was super friendly, and would speak to you anytime. He used to come to this sub shop up there quite a bit, and I would speak to him some. Its funny, as a Carolina fan, you pulled so hard against these players, when they were in College, but when they get out, you really respected them. Grant Hill, is another one who exemplifies class.

I didnt know Lefty was a Duke alum, interesting!! I may have to pull the ole handbook out and see what kind of a player he was...

We still have quite a bit of snow on the ground, and are braced for some more. Looks like a good day to put something good on the stove and pile up and watch some good hoops!! Take care....Mike.

Congratulations on a fine Duke team. I wish they were playing my team this year-Syracuse. This is going to be an exciting week for Basketball as all the top five teams will be playing in prime time on TV. It will give me an opportunity to see the top seeds for March Madness. Boy would I love to have tickets to the final four which I believe is in Indianapolis. ( too many things going on to research this). If anyone has any final four tickets, and wishes to sell them to a Syracuse fan,,,please respond.
Susan

re: the snow storm.

tuesday through thursday were canceled and a weekend make-up plan has been announced. ironically, now that classes are back in session, it's harder to walk on the sidewalks than it ever was last week, now that the snow padding the two inches of ice is gone.

the new provost, peter lange, has had a rough first year. in september, classes were canceled for the day of the arrival of The Hurricane...I can't remember which...the one that went up the coast then did a U-turn straight back into the Triangle. The next day was 76, completely clear skies, slight breeze.

the grass is still covered with snow. i hope it melts before the tenting season begins in a little over a week.

durham public schools are still postponed.

I remember DeVenzio. In those days Carolina was a perennial final four team and Duke was an ACC also-ran.

One year around 1969 or so, DeVenzio nearly single handedly beat a heavily favored UNC team. He was much quicker than the Carolina guards and he aggressively attacked and penetrated the Carolina defense. Carolina had to go to a zone and the Devils buried them with jump shots. DeVenzio eventually fouled out with 5 charging calls, but Duke got a rare win.

He was definitely a hot dog, he employed a lot of fancy behind the back dribbles and passes and such, but he was a very exciting player to watch.
