OK here is my 'all in one' message..

"I wonder how our other retirees are faring."

Well I have my ration of cookies for me and the girls and we are hunkering down - yuckie out there!

"Luke, margin calls are a happening item. Just check the boards."

This is exactly why I decided to take a little 'fire sale' insurance out today (I know 2-3 days late!) and sell my hundred shares of 'this and that' (i.e. my watch and wait portfolio) and a little bit of other core holdings of mine - just in case. I was/am concerned that margins calls on folks would drive the market down another 1-2 days and that could get ME into trouble (yucky! yes I have that evil margin too!). At least I got a nice profit booked and in the bank yesterday from Siebel but dang (!) we were just getting started! Lol! Just a side note - I LOVE Siebel but I'm holding too many shares right now and wanted to cut down my margin.

I told myself to look on the bright side..

a) Yucky as it's been this week when I looked at the net in my portfolio it's where it was 2 weeks ago. How can I complain with that?

b) Everytime I sell during such times the market usually bounces right back the next day and I'm kicking myself for selling! So maybe my selling will just 'prime' the market a bit :-) <I'm just kidding of course>

This and that...
Dang (!) I was expecting something like this BIG down turn this Feb or so (I would bet there is another before/during April tax time..). Nasty of 'them' to pull this during earnings week no? We are going to have discuss table manners with Mr. Market. An interesting article on this subject..

I can't find the link anymore but I copied a portion of the article down.. very interesting. In the article "Odd lotters' get their day" a money manager was quoted as saying that this was the first year that the MM's had been losing out to the small individual investor and where way behind the gun on the best high tech stocks and were having to buy the shares very expensively from folks like us. In short we were making money and they were losing money.. They didn't like that. When asked to comment about the future of this situation he stated.

"Maybe the biggest theme of all now is the tug of war between individual and institutional investors," Weiner said. "But we suspect something could happen in the year 2000 to change that."

Maybe someone(s) with very deep pockets REALLY wants our stock and are helping this slide a bit? I also know that many of the online brokerages seem to have upped the margin requirements on just about everything that is hot in the tech sector (JDSU, QCOM etc..) which will only amplify the problem for those living really close to the edge. I can't substantuate that but it sure looks that way from where I sit.
