Gary,

>>First, small business owners tend to be more comfortable dealing with a brick and mortar supply store (where they can return with no problem).<<

I agree with you. I personally hate the thought of having to repack and ship a PC and deal with the related hassles. I'd rather just go back to the store and deal with someone face to face so I can get it resolved immediately. I have no problem with books, CDs and other things that I know will be OK a very high percentage of the time. If I need a PC I want it immediately if not sooner and I want it to work. I have never had a problem with one, but I have since seen several friends have to ship back and forth multiple times.

Gary, I disagree about the shipping costs. They are less important on a $1000 box, but much greater than sales tax on a $400 box, at least in most states.

As far as instant gratification goes, I have never understood why anyone is willing to defer gratification. My girlfriend and I have this conversation regularly. <g>

Gary:

Also, if one buys from a "local cloner", one gets the same product for a lower price and has instant access to technical support, when the inevitable problems show up.

I still do not understand the continued appeal of the "direct sell" approach, particularly since the cloners have become a legitimate alternative. Perhaps it is a form of self aggrandizement (Dell builds a PC "tailored to your very special personal requirements"). Of course. (g)

Best, Earlie
