I'm sure that paternal attitude was just as common in the North, particularly in the 5 Northern territories that were allowed to keep slaves after the Emancipation Proclamation.

Cogniscenti such as GB Shaw, Bertie Russell, and HG Wells held similar opinions.

For an unbiased take and a rollicking and insightful good read, I highly recommend this one. I read it last year and it has really stuck with me. Horwitz isn't for or against anybody, he's merely curious as to why the war is remembered the way it is.
