Considering the low cost, it is not really worth it in my opinion to try and make you own patch cables. Plus I like the variety of colors patch cables are available in.
One other element that may be an issue is that patch cables are made from stranded wire to avoid breakage with use and make them a lot more flexible. This cable is more difficult to work with to put your own ends on.

In a pinch I have made cables from the regular solid cat 5 cable, but they are very stiff and prone to breaking a wire internally with much use.

I do keep ends and a crimper on hand to modify the length of a pre bought patch cable.

After a couple of attempts to make my own cables (using the correct tools) I opted for the factory product.
You don't want a flakey cable to foul up your system.
They're a good LONG term investment.
