Kevin,
It will be a great loss to SI if the "funniest guy on SI" leaves. Your post brought up classic marketing 101 issues. Find out what your customers want and give it to them, rather than "build something and they will come". SI nailed it on the head on the first try, and they have gone on to violate one of the basic tenets of life "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

I know that some of the great SI personalities are planning on going elsewhere after the Classic SI is laid to rest next week and this greatly reduces the value that SI has provided to me over these past 3 1/2 years.

"Unfortunately, there is no one single replacement."

Kevin,

Your remark made me wonder if there is thread where the possible alternatives are discussed.

While there may not be a single replacement for SI, there may be a better fit for individual needs. Even if one cannot find a "better fit" it might be helpful to know where one can find features that SI dropped, is "working on", "considering", etc. or never even dreamed of!

I disagree.

For all of its flaws, there is still a great deal of value to SI and the value lies in the sharp people who remain. Please reconsider.

Kevin,

It is clear to me that SI is no longer the best place to go for stock market insight and chat. And now that it is part of weaseltown, it is extremely un-cool.

You are definitely one of the coolest guys I've ever met online and the funniest one to boot. It's not been the same since Josef left and others decided to play the penny game. The lawsuit had a sobering effect on things (well, not me), but it's been a tough year. You are right it's not the same place at all. I'm out of here as well? Want a cookie?

Kevin, one of the most disgusting things imho about go2net is their policy of turning over without question or warning posters' identity and location to ambulance-chasers working for non-reporting stock touts who get hundred-dollar bullshit subpoenas so that the touts can harass whistle-blowers. I don't think Brad and Jeff would have done this, if you read their early posts on their ideal of open and frank discussion they clearly support it.

Actually we don't know what the go2net policy is as they won't spell it out in public, but judging from my memory of an email from Ethan Allen [sp?] their lawyer on the Welcome thread last summer, they do not in any way respect the security of their posters, they just hand them over to whoever asks with a fancy piece of paper. This contrasts vividly with the policy of John Woods of Stockwatch, who doesn't even collect identities of his posters, nor their ISP details nor anything that could compromise the poster's security. There are getting to be quite a few posts on this thread now - forums.canada-stockwatch.com
... but under the sub-thread 'Lawsuit threatened by stox.com' [here opened in new window] - forums.canada-stockwatch.com
.. Mr Woods expresses his philosophy on free speech and the measures he takes to safeguard it ... he certainly has my respect for this stand, as do Brad and Jeff because i am confident they would have stood up for their community to the extent they were able ... but it is yet another way, and an important one, in which go2net just doesn't get it, and stumbles badly.

If i find any go2net share paper in the street, i'll cash it in real quick.

[edit] - marketspirit.com is another with an extremely strongly worded privacy policy - they say they won't hand you over to nobody never for any reason whatsoever .. it's in the sign-up page ... not much chance of getting junk mail and email spam from somebody who bought your info from them either ... gotta like that, eh .. cheers
