A lil rain (or snow as in today's case) and you'll be down. A wireless ISP is great if you live in the right areas.

Good point. I never considered that. However access 90 percent of the time during market hours is 90 percent more than I have now.

Luckily it should not be a problem here in LA. One small rain storm so far this year and I seem to remember a tiny hail storm a couple of years ago.

A couple of updates on my post.

I just saw a nice little laptop at comp USA (while picking up Turbo Tax). Sony had a VERY slim machine..64 MB RAM and a 6.4 gig harddrive with a Celeron 333. This thing seemed less than half the thickness of the Toshiba...$300 more at about $1500. Smaller screen (ten inch) but the small size with a usable keyboard could be a plus.

No CDROM on the Sony. It looks to be about 3/4 inch thick..probably no room for the CD drive. One can buy a USB CDROM.

More on Metricom

They have delayed their estimated roll out until late summer. They claim component availability. My guess is they will run into more snags...hopefully they will have something before Christmas.

I read something somewhere about the modems talking to each other if they are less than 1500 ft apart. Is there a home wireless network opportunity here?? I emailed Metricom with the question. I would guess that if one had two modems you could at least use PC amywhere as means to a network. Their info indicates one can access a work network for file downloads via their wireless modem.
