texas instruments and hewlett packard seem to be doing ok even though calculators are almost obsolete. i think microsoft will be coming out with new stuff by the time computers are obsolete. just look at the percent of revenue going to research and new investments.

"Will The Market
Downdraft Continue?
Bob Brogan says yes and explains why. Also in this special edition of Technical Analysis Brogan reviews the major indices and identifies potential winners and losers. (PSE) (BMET) (MOLX) (ITWO) (IFF) (MIL) (CSCO) (MFNX) (COMS) (HAS) (CCR) (TRW) (RD) (SNA) (SEG) (HI)"

he also talks about microsoft. listening to him predict a 25% decline in tech stocks is the surest sign up of an upturn.

Dear Tippet:

"Yeah, but would you pay 60 times earnings for Ford or Chrysler or fill-in-the-blank ... "

Believe it, I would.
I think you are missing the point.
I would gladly pay for this "RIGHT" rather than be forced to take "public transportation", ie public control of the computer space ala SUNW/ORCL. Individual control is why our country thrives. You would rather take the bus, and pay bus fare?

".. but continued biz doesn't mean MSFT's stock keeps going and going and going ... can you even separate the two?..."

Granted, MSFT's space is evolving. Whether it keeps going and going and going is a fair question.
For my money, I do not know of a better investment alternative.

Abbigail

Well, before MSFT drops, SUNW will drop first !!!SUNW's major business is hardware, and now it wants to get into the software market through a monopoly of JAVA ( Do you know why SUNW wants to controll JAVA?). As the price of per calculation power of PC continues to drop, more and more companies will switch from the Sparc based workstation to the Wintel based stations, as you know the 1 GHrz CPU is about to release. If we can use a powerful PC to do both intensive simulation, and send e-mails, then why should I just buy one single powerful PC to do both , instead of Buying one workstation + one PC for each employee ? That is quite a lot of savings for companies. So, SUNW is sweating !!!!
