Dell Gives A Processor Boost To Departmental Server Line By MIKE KOLLER Looking to add more punch to its crop of workgroup and departmental servers, Dell Computer yesterday rolled out the first system based on Intel's latest high-end processor. Dell's new PowerEdge 4400 is the first server based on the new 800-MHz Pentium III Zeon processor available in the United States, an Intel spokesman said, though several major server vendors will roll out systems with the new processor in coming weeks. In addition to shipping with a dual Pentium processor, the PowerEdge 4400 is based on a 64-bit quad-peer PCI architecture. Redundant PCI support offer improved availability, Dell said. Separately, Dell released a new slim rack mount unit for facilities with limited space. Based on dual-processor 133-MHz Pentium III processors, the PowerEdge fits in a 3.5-inch rack and has 2 GBs of main memory and up to 91 GBs of internal storage capacity. Connected to a PowerVault external SCSI storage system, the 2450 can support up to 9.5 TBs of total storage, which Dell said will lower costs for customers. One customer who plans to buy 80 PowerEdge 2450s said he can benefit by its economy of size. "The more of these thin servers you can stuff into the rack, the better," said Daniel Basse, IT manager for eGain Communications, a provider of solutions for eCommerce customer communications. Pricing for the PowerEdge 4400 starts at $4,699, and the PowerEdge 2450 starts at $3,999.
