PB, re Dell Xeon 800 sighting, don't forget Compaq:

New Compaq servers, up to and including 800 MHz Xeons:

Compaq's new hardware includes the DL380, a low-profile, 4.5-inch-high server that
replaces the ProLiant 1850R. It can accommodate up to two 733-MHz Pentium III
processors, and has a 133-MHz front-side bus and room for up to four 1-inch-wide
Ultra2 SCSI hard drives. Prices start at $4,886. Later this year, Compaq will add a
two-way, 1.5-inch-high system to the ProLiant DL line.

Compaq is also introducing floor-standing or rack-mount servers: The ML530
replaces the ProLiant 3000, the ML370 replaces the ProLiant 1600, and the ML350
replaces the ProLiant 800 and the Prosignia 740. The ML350 uses up to two 600-
or 733-MHz Pentium III CPUs; the ML370 has up to two 667- or 733-MHz Pentium
III chips; and the ML530-also a two-way system-uses the 800-MHz Xeon and has
12 hot-pluggable hard-drive bays. Prices start at $2,272, $3,400, and $5,340,
respectively.

PB, Tenchusatsu, I saw something about AMD not having an SMP capable chipset out until a year from now, or something like that. What's up with that? Is that a No Mas declaration for AMD in servers? That's a lucrative business to have to yourself for Intel, if so.

Tony

PB - Re: " 800 Xeon sighting"

Yes.

And a 133 MHz Pentium III sighting as well!

"Based on dual-processor 133-MHz Pentium III processors, the PowerEdge fits in a 3.5-inch rack "

I guess Intel covers the low and the high end, all at once.

01/31 1:24P (DJ) Computer Maker Silicon Graphics To Introduce New Linux-Based Products Story 0895 (INTC-D, INTC, RHAT, SGI, SGIY-D, I/CPM, I/CPR, I/SEM, I/SOF...)

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -(Dow Jones)- Computer maker Silicon Graphics Inc. plans to unveil new Linux operating system-based products at the LinuxWorld conference in New York City, including a new Internet server and a new clustering environment, as well as Linux services.

Silicon Graphics (SGI) said it now offers a comprehensive portfolio of Linux service, support and education products. Based on Silicon Graphics hardware, software, professional services and partnerships, the new set of services ranges from Linux clustering and technology migration services to custom Linux business programs.

The SGI Internet server is designed for Internet service providers, application-service providers and co-location facilities and includes Internet-specific management, monitoring and security tools with integrated basic services for Web serving and messaging.

Silicon Graphics, which makes interactive computer systems, also will unveil the SGI Linux ACE computer cluster, which consists of a suite of programming, management and performance tools, services and support.

The products Silicon Graphics will unveil at LinuxWorld are based on the new SGI 1200 server. SGI 1200 comes preinstalled with Red Hat Linux 6.1 and the SGI ProPack for Linux 1.2 and is equipped with one or two Intel Pentium III processors, up to 2GB SDRAM memory, and up to 4 Ultra2 SCSI disks.

The SGI Internet Server starts at about $4,600 and features a 550 MHz Intel Pentium III processor, 128MB RAM, 9GB drive with preinstalled Red Hat Linux 6.1, SGI ProPack for Linux 1.2, integrated Internet serving tools and world-wide technical support.

Silicon Graphics expects the the product to be available later this quarter.

The pricing for the SGI Linux ACE starts at $125,000 for a typical configuration including 16 SGI 1200 servers - for a total of 32 processors, SGI Linux Advanced Cluster Environment software, 100Base-T interconnect and implementation services.

The LinuxWorld conference will be from Feb. 2 to Feb. 4. The free Linux operating system is maintained by a world-wide group of computer programmers. The software is quickly gaining market share in the computer server market, particularly for Web servers and is seen as one of the few systems to directly challenge the dominance of Microsoft Corp.'s Windows operating system.
