Agreed on the being in love part, but I wouldn't be so hard on MSD. Dell management executed their business plan very well during 1995-98, and the shareholders bid the stock up accordingly.

MSD's sales are normal. Whether or not a shareholder heeds his moves towards diversification as a call for their own, is up to them. I diversified, right out of DELL. That was an extreme move that not everyone needed to do. I needed to do it because I saw other opportunities to compound my DELL wealth (while moving away from a one-stock mindset). As it happened, my telecom investments required more than 100% of my capital (no room for DELL with my new focus).

I feel bad for my friends on this thread who have had a tough go of it for the past twelve months. But, it was their choice (for whatever their reasons) to stay in it. I'm sure that some of them believe that they have done the right thing. I am not about to question their personal wisdom, since it is not my money we're talking about.

I still follow this thread, because I do have a lot of friends here, and I get tired of seeing them get beat on for their thoughts. If you're trying to convince them of something, perhaps a more gentle approach is in order.

My change out of DELL probably got some people to think about their personal holdings. That was probably out of consideration for my credibility with this thread (not to pound my chest, or anything). Credibility is important, when trying to make a good argument. So is not being too forceful.

I followed the chain of posts between you and the devout, and I notice that you didn't post that you were short DELL until sometime after beating it up for a while (at least that I could find). This doesn't do wonders for your credibility. Please do not take this as a personal attack, BTW. I see this many places on SI (and am probably guilty of it myself from time to time).

Just my thoughts...

edamo i think the biggest mistake dell has made to it's share holders was to have split the stock so many times which of course is what also made them rich.. dell did not see the end of the tunnel in this or they could have refrained from splitting the last time which would have given the stock a better chance to recover from 50%-30% recession.. now i would think this is like going from being overweight with clogged arteries, looming heart problems and a long slowed down life style, to a healthier, leaner, internal cleansing, faster moving machine... a real positive shot in the arm now for the stock would be for them to announce a more aggressive buy-back plan... wall st will go absolutely crazy to get back in.. everything else will fall in line after w2k release... the company is still making profits and expecting them to increase...they already got that part taken care of...they should go on the other end and bring the valuations up by taking some of the pieces away.
