Re: SNDK--The issue of their kingliness or gorilla-ality is still open, I think. They are very aggressive about protecting their IP, and there are several lawsuits outstanding. They do have a lot patents. It's not clear (to me, anyway) what kind of barriers SNDK's IP provides. But, I think it is clear that SNDK has more techniques for dealing with data in flash than its competitors. Also, the Toshiba JV indicates to me that SNDK has proprietary knowledge (as well as expertise) that Toshiba needs.

Is there a half-way point between King and Gorilla? Some IP barriers to entry, but not insurmountable. Position of dominance. Preeminence based primarily on its engineering expertise, but potential competitors are limited. There are only a limited number of ways to do some of the things that flash has to do. A lot of the ways for doing these things are patented, by SNDK and others. And, CompactFlash appears to be SNDK's. Can a form factor be a sufficient barrier to annoint a Gorilla? I don't think so--but it can provide a nice niche.

Best,
John

Where to put $10K after Fed decision? I am new to SI and am still reading GG-R. As I expect there to be some 'buy'
opportunities later this week, I am struggling with deciding where to put a recent rollover of $10K into my IRA.
Would y'all suggest buying into ICG or CMGI 'families' to get into the tech game for now or spread it over a sector of chimps, e.g. web software (CTXS et al)? All suggestions welcome at this stage.
