MITSUI FUDOSAN SIGNS DEAL WITH 10 TELECOMS CARRIERS
Mon Jan 31 21:26:00 EST 2000

TOKYO, Feb 01, 2000 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) -- Mitsui Fudosan Co. (TSE:8801) had
agreed with 10 communications companies on the installation of their lines, the
major real estate developer said Monday.

The deal will offer tenants of its approximately 300 office buildings freedom to
choose between telecom services.

Tenants of office buildings, who until now had no choice but to use circuits
offered by the NTT East Corp. and NTT West Corp., will be able to shop around
for the best rates.

The 10 concerns belong to seven groups and include three firms belonging to the
Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. (TSE:9432) group, two which are part of the
KDD Corp. (TSE:9431) group and the Japan Telecom Co. (TSE:9434).

Also included are the Japanese subsidiaries of U.S. firms MCI WorldCom Inc. and
Level 3 Communications Inc.

Mitsui Fudosan plans to install conduits for fiber-optic cables and provide
telecoms equipment-friendly office space at a cost of 1-2 billion yen by the end
of this year.

The company will also give priority to the 10 firms in providing the information
necessary for installing the lines in the rental buildings.

The Tokyo-based company will divide the buildings it owns and manages across the
nation into three categories: 70 large buildings, 160 midsize units and 70 small
units. It plans to install all seven groups' optical fiber cables into the large
buildings and equip them with antennas for wireless data communications.

The midsized buildings would be fitted with the cables of at least three
carriers and the small premises with those of at least two telecoms firms.

New telecom carriers and foreign concerns wishing to make inroads into the
Japanese market have urged the NTT group to slash its connection fees for the
use of its local networks.

But in cases where the telecoms newcomers want to install their circuits in
office buildings, they need to gain the consent of owners, many of whom are
reluctant to bother with the extensive engineering work necessary to fit their
buildings with the lines.

An agreement with a major real estate company such as Mitsui Fudosan thus saves
the telecoms firms the trouble of dealing with many individual owners.
