There's a major difference between Japanese JIT and the Dell model. In Japan, component suppliers are in very close proximity to the assembly plants -- often clustered in the same industrial complex. That lessens the chance of disruption of supply.

And of course, the most interesting point of all is that the JIT concept was actually developed in this country and taught in US business schools. American conceit following WWII probably precluded adoption of the model. But the industrial devastation in Japan following WWII prompted them to try something new. What Dell added was the use of the internet to enhance integration.
