Kevin, in my business, labs typically offer pap smears for less than cost to get "pullthrough" business. They offer a service that people want in order to attract customers to pay for their more lucrative tests.

The same is true for retail. People advertise loss leaders that are desired products that the public wants in order to get them to buy more profitable items. One cannot assume that because there is a discount (which is part of the company's advertising campaign to lure customers) that the product isn't selling well. When I see diet coke on sale for $2 a six-pack I never make the assumption that it is not selling well, but rather that it is a lure to get me into the store to buy other things, which I usually do.

You should at least speak to store managers or buyers to get an honest idea as to how a product is selling. Or, you could just ask Bill. Your choice. One liners aren't logic and they are not how to invest.
