---> controlling production end-to-end

Proprietary equipment is certainly an advantage for any company that has unique and superior processing technologies. Companies that use standard processes are probably better off purchasing the equipment from a specialized supplier. For example, most companies just buy MOCVD or MBE equipment from AIXTRON, Emcore, or VG Semicon to do the epitaxial layers for devices.

Emcore is close to end-to-end in their LED joint ventures, though I assume they purchase the bulk substrates. They call themselves "the leading vertically integrated materials science company in the field of compound semiconductors," but that hasn't integrated to profits.

CREE is absolutely on fire today. I'd like to think that I did my part by buying the LED flashlight <gg>. Of course those could be Nichia LEDs, I suppose.
