Good morning! I was re-reading some Shelby Foote earlier. His take is the war was inevitable. By the 50's the Websters, Clays, and Calhouns were gone. That generation of leaders had who shepherded the country through some turbulent arguments with peaceful compromise were gone. There was no one left to reign in the fire-eaters (his word) in Massachussetts and South Carolina. Any idiot (not his word) can start a war. I think 1860 was a generation of idiots.
