rude - you would have to compare the Tandem's to Sun's Netra FT line of Servers - Tandem's are highly specialized and cant really be compared to a "general purpose" server like a Sun Ultra or HP K or V.

Uptime guarantees are B.S anyway - Theoretical machine MTBF is extremely high for anyone with the real differentiatior being the OS, applications and recoverability of disk subsystems. Sun is very robust and manageable out of the box. So is DEC Unix and HP though Sun has more features like dynamic reconfiguration (add cpu's, memory - without rebooting).
My question is why anyone would pay additional to have a 3-9's guarantee? either its mission critical or its not - if it is you pay for the cluster, the services, training, support and environment - otherwise why bother -your not going to get mission critical on a single node machine whether its unix or nt.

".. do not have a great record for overall availability."

Who's keeping track of this info - there is certainly no single measurement? certainly in the minds of the marketplace and the IS managers that buy workstations, low to high end unix servers Sun is at the top. I concede the VAX is more reliable - but thats not going to help is it?
