Great televsion program on synthetic diamonds on the PBS NOVA show last night. Lots of scientists, especailly unemployed Russian ones, were working on the technology. Early stones has metal inclusions due to the flow process, but they figured out how to control the flow of carbon and eliminate inclusions. Then the stones were colored, due to nitrogen, and they figured out how to eliminate that problem. DeBeers contunes to work very hard to develop methods to determine real vs. synthetic, and now are apparently puttign a microscopic DeBeers logo on the stones !
