In general, government is a very inefficient allocator of capital. Our capital markets are far more efficient at directing research than some guy making a state of the union speech, trying to score political points.

Of course some things, like research on "orphan" diseases or for national defense must be funded by the government because there isn't much market for the former and there shouldn't be for the latter.

All the above doesn't obviate the fact that nihil made no sense, saying we must fund government directed research for capitalism and that such researchers are entitled to get rich to boot. They are not. That's not their contract. That is the province of entrepreneurs and those working in the private sector, where they take the risk of failure and deserve the proceeds of their success.
