Paul,
RE:they had released the programming source code required to create Linux software ready to run on Intel's IA-64 chip due out later this year.

This levels the playing field for all the Software vendors who want to introduce new products.

Now maybe old IBM's saying will come through, All the profit margins are in Hardware, software will have smaller margins. something like that.

Paul, RE: "Linux-IA64 is READY TO GO !"

I am starting to be impressed with Linux, strictly from the standpoint of acceptance and speed to market. As one after another of the PC makers said they would ship with Linux, I kept thinking they were winking to each other and saying "Yea, we're cool, but this stuff will never sell".

As time goes by I'm not so sure this isn't a real software challenge to Microsoft. The model of open code and software developers essentially working for free, for companies that sell final packaged products, seems like it could bring products to market much faster than Microslow (er, soft).

What do you think, Paul, is it worth looking into the Red Hats?

John

Paul - Re: "64 bit Linux for the Intel IA64 is NOW READY TO SHIP"

When is Linux or any other OS going to be "ready to ship" for the AMD 64 bit Sludge Hummer?

Paul, Re: "I wonder why LINUX hasn't put the FIRE to Microsoft the way AMD has put the FIRE to Intel?"

Well, here's one thing Microsoft is doing, in partnership with EMC and their recently purchased Data General:

EMC Corp. and Microsoft Corp. today announced a strategic alliance designed to help organizations worldwide more
effectively build and deploy highly reliable, available and manageable business solutions using the Microsoft©
Windows© 2000 Server network operating system. The companies will combine Windows 2000, leading storage solutions and services from EMC, along with end-to-end solutions and services from EMC's Data General division to address the computing requirements of customers with the most demanding information technology environments.

As part of the alliance, Data General is offering the industry's first 99.9 percent uptime service guarantee for Windows 2000, enhancing its high-availability solutions for customers running their mission-critical operations on Microsoft enterprise platforms. This uptime service guarantee will cover clustered Data General servers running Windows 2000 Advanced Server or Windows 2000 Data Center Server, when available.

Of course, Data General is an all Intel shop. So, this might be a good first step toward guaranteed uptime service using a Microsoft OS. It wouldn't hurt my feelings if a ton of hardware, and software got sold toward this end, since I'd have (at least) 3 stocks participating.
