LU is the clear world leader in CDMA market share at 40%+ as per DataQuest and Strategis. LU already has a huge optical deal with China Unicom, and has been very active in telecom projects with China Telecom as well. Licensing will not be an issue, as LU has significant manufacturing in country and very good relationships with the government. It is highly likely LU gets its fair share of this contract IF it actually gets built out this year.

John, From what I understand, LU is a player and presently has deals in China, though perhaps not in wireless. LU and QCOM also have a working relationship, to the point where LU does not pay QCOM royalties. I do not know what the article meant when it said that LU was not licensed or approved.

In the all Employee conf call on 1-27-00. Pat Russo(CEO Service Provider Networks)said that Lucent should be finalizing contracts in the coming months to help build the CDMA infrastructure in China and Europe.
