Paul,

<< I read several histories of the early computers - obviously the Mauchly-Eckert ENIAC gets the most press. >>

I thought the first transistor came in 1947, the first first real-time computer in 1951, the first electronically stored program in 1952, the first OS was developed by Amdahl in 1954, the first 'electronic' computer from Japan came from NEC in 1958, the first mini computer came from DEC in 1960, and the first 'PC' came 11 years later with the Kenbak 1.

Now, humble carl humbly points out that the first 'digital' computer was created in Iowa during the second World War, Before the transistor. And you mention the ENIAC (which i have heard of but know nothing about). I guess I'm just a little confused as to what the _ell the definition of a computer is? ;-) My dictionary doesn't seem to fit here, perhaps because the definition of a computer is constantly changing.

thanks for any thoughts,
pigboy
