Now, will they settle before the launch?

The Web and Windows 2000

Speaking at his first investor conference since assuming the
post of chief financial officer at Microsoft in early January,
John Connors told an audience of fund managers and
analysts that the soon-to-be released Windows 2000
software is "fundamentally core to the company's Internet
efforts."

Windows 2000, now scheduled to be
introduced Feb. 17, offers stronger system
architecture, more reliable applications,
fewer reboots and mobile support among
other features, Connors said at the
conference in San Francisco.

Windows 2000 will be accompanied by a
number of other software products,
including the Exchange 2000 server, SQL
Server 2000, Commerce Server and a few
others. Microsoft (MSFT: news, msgs)
had been criticized as being late in
recognizing the significance of the
Internet.

Connors also highlighted Microsoft's
Next-Generation Windows Services, a
project he said Bill Gates has been
working on, which offers a new
programming approach for building
applications for multiple devices. The
introduction is set for this May. Connors
said the new product will have a new user
interface, file system and voice, speech and other forms of
input methods.

Connors said that Microsoft's Internet properties, which
include MSN and Microsoft.com, are the third-busiest on
the Web, though he didn't cite a source. He emphasized,
however, that the Internet as a whole still has a long way to
go. The Web faces challenges with information sharing and
multiple data formats, he said. Varying digital and analog
voice technologies, as well as privacy and security, are also
major challenges, he noted.
