Richard, I had to laugh when I read this part from your post: The two banks had bet heavily against the devaluation and would have suffered heavy losses on the foreign exchange futures market had the Central Bank not stepped in to sell them dollars at below-market rates. One eventually folded anyway.

I just KNEW all those billions of greenbacks printed up--ostensibly for Y2K and sitting around in our military reservations guarded by our doughboys--were going to be on sale...I just didn't know it was going to be at "firesale" prices...and to South America no less.

Isn't our Fed Reserve a prescient hoot? They don't have to worry about printing money to put into the system to bail out G/S, Merrill or whomever...all they have to do is distribute what has already been printed.

BTW, I thought your taciturn comment about not rushing in to support ole Marty Armstrong was dead on!

The enemy is still the enemy...and, last I looked, he hadn't become the enemy of MY enemy. Besides, how does quoting a Billy Sol Estes of the silver market garner any political hay for the gaddabouts led by Murphy's very own Murphy poster boy?

And folks wonder why gold can't go up? We don't even know who to get mad at anymore...they all have had horrid childhoods and it isn't "their" fault, you know...

One parting shot...how come when Ken Benes returned from his high level mtg out of the country he didn't bring back word of Ashanti lawsuits announced late last night? Isn't it wonderful that we have our own roving reporter?
