re: QCOM and component shortages

An obvious question for the thread that I haven't seen asked: What are the components that are short, and who makes them?

Q and Motorola have both apparently referenced component shortages as constraining handset delivery. There are obviously various component makers supplying these parts. These makers are, along with QCOM, presumably participants in the Tornado. Is there an opportunity here?

Best,
John

LindyBill,

<< typical European attitude toward Q >>

The European attitude toward Q did NOT improve today.

This is the lead story out of the GSM World Congress in Cannes today:

>> THE GREAT CDMA NO-SHOW

Big news resulted in no news this week for the CDMA Development Group (CDG). Perry LaForge, executive director of the CDG, canceled plans to meet with reporters and GSM representatives in Cannes in order to focus his lobbying efforts on Asia. <<

gsmnewsreel.com

Perry is the guy that keeps telling us:

"there will be a huge opportunity in Europe for CDMA as an overlay or augmentation to existing GSM systems"

Don't take a CDMA overlay in Europe to the bank.

The unfortunate part of this is that Terry Yen could not attend either due to a family emergency. Terry is Director of Asia Pacific Projects and leader of the international roaming team for the CDMA Development Group (CDG). He is highly respected within the GSM community. Perry never was. Certainly won't be now.

On a related topic:

Here is a quote from an article called "CDMA vs. CDMA" that Ruffian just posted on the S&P500 thread:

"However, no one outside the CDG sees it that way, and Qualcomm's IPR hold-out strategy is a gambit that could well alienate it from the rest of the industry outside of the US even more than it already is."

Last evening Scott Zion published a link to an issue of The Baskerville Comm 3G Mobile Newsletter (pdf) dated 11/17/99....

It is worth a read.

I started this week exceptionally Q positive because of the first time participation by Q in the GSM World Congress.

Did you see any noteworthy press releases by Qualcomm out of the annual GSM event this week? I did not.
