I wonder -- if they were flying a flag with the Aids ribbon on it, and it offended right wing churches, would you still agree that they would take it down because it is a sign of controversy?

Not because it offended right wing churches or because it is a sign of controversy, but because I don't see how you draw the line when a partisan symbol is flown over a place that supposedly represents all. THe Aids ribbon is an excellent example of something that has many political overtones and doesn't belong over the capitol. Courage of WHOSE convictions? Without a vote, or a law, how can the government have convictions?

I'm not sure I'm articulating this very well!

Now Martin Luther KIng--- hmmm- well that IS a nationally recognized Day. Would I care if "they" (who are they?) flew it ONLY on that day? no. Of course then they should have a special flag for George, and Abe, and the Veterans and ...
BUt every day-? Yes, I would. If you're talking government places.

Did you read the article Coby posted? Really interesting! She finds great articles. I need to catch up-- I'm behind on posts I see. My cable connection has been very very bad all day and I keep losing posts so I'm frustrated.
I think we ARE trying to get to the principle here, don't you? (I love the South, but the flag isn't the South to me so I'm not emotionally involved in its display one way or another.)

Oh-- rereading your post--- I didn;t realize there was a boycott by others. Busybodies. A bad reason to take it down-- it doesn't answer the question of principle or law.
