All I know that CPQs stock ran up to 51 on anticipation of shareholders getting some AV in a spin off. After CPQ dorked around the stock had no underlying support and fell out of bed, just look at the time line and the charts. CPQ did a pathetic job of supporting shareholder value. As far as I'm concerned, AV is still a premier portal and was more so back when Compaq could have spun it off. All you need to do is look back at the IPO/merger action of search engines during that time, They were climbing in a big way.
An AV IPO at that time would have been through the roof...
