The XBox would be a giant win for AMD, but not because they will be using millions of Athlons. These Athlons will probably be sold to MS with very little profit. The real benefit will be in Microsoft burning the midnight oil to make sure that their compilers are optimized for Athlon -- especially for gaming performance. This will benefit Athon in many other markets.

Epinephrine,

<is it possible that he may be simplifying things and that he actually installed chipset drivers etc. If he did and Microsoft is considering this chipset for the XBox then I would wonder if the performance difference could be due to Microsoft's work in tweaking VIA's chipset drivers to improve performance in Windows98. Is this reasonable or am I in left field? >

NT driver could be a factor. But I don't know if X-Box can be related in this scenario. I can only say it's possible. And I don't want to be too excited about the X-Box rumor. If it's true, it'll be a very nice bonus to AMD. What AMD needs to do is to ensure the quality and availability of Athlon infrastructure support.
