Barry - <How long do you think I might be stuck with 144k before I can get an upgrade?>

I don't know. I live ~800 ft. from the switch, and I'm qualified for 8 Meg. They offered the upgrade "just cuz", after 6 months.

It sounds like you might be stuck with 144k, until some sort of repeater infrastructure is put in place....or cable.

I'd still take 144k over dial-up though, if the cost is the same.

OT: As a paranoid cable modem user, I installed BlackICE defender yesterday. I've already had four "attacks" of the port scan variety, and one attack looking for a Trojan Horse.

I highly recommend that you invest in some kind of personal firewall software if you've got an always-on connection. I chose BlackICE based on a recommendation from our IS guy at HQ. There are others available, though. Do that, and update your anti-virus software weekly.

It's a scary Internet out there, and it gets scarier the more I learn (and I've been on the internet since 90).
