Farming Out Storage
SSPs Milk Growing Need For Storage Infrastructure And Services

First there were ISPs. Then ASPs. Now yet another twist on the service-provider market is emerging,SSPs, or storage solution providers.

SSPs own, operate and manage storage infrastructures designed to store and/or manage clients' data. They seem to come in all shapes, sizes and technology backgrounds, and range in scale from small providers that offer file sharing over the Internet to companies that offer enterprise-class services to dot.coms.

<snip>

The net result: most data eventually will be stored outside the corporation that owns it, said Dave Hill, senior analyst for storage and storage management at Aberdeen Group Inc., Boston.

Dot.coms will be the first to embrace the SSP model, followed by companies with special needs such as temporary storage, he said.
